Consumer should be cautious and cognizant of Airbnb’s unfair cancellation terms until revised
On December 2016, Airbnb filed an objection to the Korea Fair Trade Commission’s decisions on ordering Airbnb to revise its policy terms on cancellations. However, on March 14, 2017, Airbnb withdrew its objection, thus the corrective order has been confirmed. Airbnb’s revision plans for its cancellation policies are as below: l Revise the “Strict” cancellation policy to 100% refund of accommodation fees up until 30 days prior arrival and 50% of accommodation fees if the guest cancels less than 30 days in advance.
l According to the revised cancellation policies, the service fee charged by Airbnb (6-12% of the accommodation fees) will be fully refunded if the guest cancels his/her booking prior to arrival.
l Revised cancellation polices will be announced on the Airbnb website by early April 2017 and will be implemented worldwide before June 2, 2017. KFTC recommends consumers to be cautious and cognizant of Airbnb’s unfair cancellation terms until revised policies are fully implemented. The antitrust watchdog in Korea said if Airbnb fails to implement the proposed remedies, it could face criminal charges.
